Why it’s important to keep staff hydrated
Having access to drinking water in the workplace is not just desirable, it is essential. There is a clear duty on employers to provide drinking water at work, under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992. The Regulations state that an “adequate supply of wholesome drinking water” must be provided, and that it be readily available at suitable and clearly marked places.
Since 1992 our attitude to hydration has changed considerably. The benefits of drinking water and staying hydrated have been well publicised and awareness has been raised amongst the general public.
It is widely acknowledged that keeping hydrated has many benefits, but how does this apply to our staff and colleagues at work?
Staying healthyDehydration can cause headaches, tiredness and nausea. It can also affect our ability to concentrate and may lead to long term health problems including kidney damage.
Keeping staff well-hydrated throughout the working day can help to reduce sickness and improve wellbeing.
Mood enhancingBeing slightly hydrated can have an impact on people’s behaviour, including being negative and irritable. Having a drink of water can refresh your mind and your thinking. Providing access to water can improve the mood of the workplace and make for a pleasant working environment.
Improve productivityIf poor hydration leads to poor concentration, it stands to reason that productivity will be adversely affected. The provision of regular breaks and easy access to water will be repaid with increased productivity and improved efficiency.
Quality drinking waterThe most convenient way of providing cool, fresh drinking water is via a water cooler.
