Westways Vending prepares for the new £1 Coin

In just a few weeks’ time, a newly designed £1 coin will come into circulation. The 12 sided bi-metal coin, reminiscent of the old threepenny piece, is quite different to our current £1, which has been in use since 1983. It will be more difficult to replicate the new design, reducing the introduction of fake coins.

The introduction of new coinage has a massive impact on industries using coin acceptors such as vending and car park machines, shopping trolleys, amusement arcades and turnstiles. Here at Westways Vending, we are about to embark on a project to upgrade all of our coin mechanisms to accept the new £1. This involves visiting every vending machine to install new software, or to replace those mechanisms which are now obsolete.

Managing Director Ian Baker says “we want our customers to receive reliable service from our equipment whether they are using the new or the old £1 coin. We intend to complete our project in good time for the implementation in March, and we have taken steps to ensure that all of our machines will accept both coins in the short term.” The old £1 coins will be removed from circulation by the banks over a very short period, so now is the time to start thinking about emptying change jars and piggy banks before the old £1 is no longer legal tender in the Autumn.

If you require advice on upgrading your vending equipment to accept the new £1 coin, please give us a call on 0800 195 3170 or see our website
